A couple months ago I was lucky when, Chris Thornley from Thornley Creative Communications, introduced me to a couple people from the Surrey Homelessness and Housing Society. They were having a video contest for the youth focusing on the theme “Everyone Has a Home”. This opportunity allowed me to work with a great group of youth from the Newton Youth Resource Centre PCRS. We were able to provide a free full production workshop, including screenwriting, production, and post-production, editing on Adobe Premiere Pro. The equipment was provided by one of our Surrey International Film Festival partners, the Surrey Libraries, and students were able to edit their films in the Computer Learning Centre. Students were trained with gear from Glen Chua Media, and then were able to take home high end production equipment provided by GearHouse Camera Rentals for the weekend. I was luckily enough to work with the students as well as be a judge for the contest which had it’s screening at the Surrey Central Library. There were some great entries, and the talent and creativity from these youth was inspiring. I’ve attached the winning videos below, as well as some photos from the event.
